Hi guys,

I bought a 1982 shell about a month ago and i have been waiting for the logbook to arrive since the car got here. I'm starting to get worried as i was not there to get the slip when the car was signed over to me. The old keeper claims to have sent the V5 to me, but i'm not sure.

The flitches had been cut out of the shell before i had it, so there is no chassis number plate if i need to apply for a new V5. Is there any way that i can find out the chassis number from the cars registration?

Thanks

An hpi check will give you the vin!

Is it not in the scuttle lip?

You sure?

Did one over the weekend for a mini I'm buying, initially just did it with the reg, it didn't tell me what the vin number was, however when I added the vin number to the check it said it matched.

I may have just missed it, as I quickly went back to add the vin number as I just quickly glanced through the report to check it wasn't on any lists as being stolen or written off, before remembering I'd forgotten to add the vin number initially.

If your worried fill in a v62 iirc, and stump up the £25 for a new v5, that way the old owner will get a letter asking for his permission to change the keeper, but if he doesn't respond within 2 weeks iirc his consent is assumed I believe and you'll get a new v5 issued in your name.

Oh dear....

So you now have a mini shell which you have no identity for and no way on knowing what it is... hope you didn't loose too much money, and for your sake, I hope it's not stolen.

I had one done through Experian last year on a bike I bought on here and it gave the chassis number!

have you checked the scuttle lip to see if the stamped in VIN is still there? It should be just off centre towards the drivers side

Fair enough, did mine with hpi and I can't remember seeing it, but maybe different ones give different info.

Just a quick one Jam, he sent it direct to DVLA as opposed to your address - this could be why you haven't received it yet but to be sure you can apply for a new V5 due to seller not sending it for free, however i am not sure about the vin number.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm going to give the DVLA a call at some point in the week and try to find out if they have received the V5 from the previous owner. If not then ill contact him and find out whats going on.

I've just checked the scuttle lip and i cant see anything there.

Thanks again!

Do you have number plates for the car? Receipt for it? Does it look like its been on the road recently?

I know the registration and i have a receipt. Its hard to tell if it has been on the road as it is literally just a rolling shell.

If he has sent the v5 directly to the dvla then expect about a 5 week wait, I've just received mine for a car I bought 5 weeks ago.

May be of some help.

Car Dealers use Experian as it gives the VIN no from reg but there are different levels of access as with DVLA database so a member of the public may not get the full trade info.....unless you know a friendly car dealer who can make inquiry on your behalf.
