I can store a car under a cover fine without any problems a such, but for restoring one you definitely need a garage IMO

Have a look at this thread, he did all of his work on the drive and stored it outside

Yes he did but Graham still had some issues with moisture and rust starting again.

Hi,

just seen this,  I have been at it for three years on and off now and working outside is difficult to be honest.  It is definitely the weather that is the real problem,  wind blowing your welding gas away,  rain stopping you working,  snow stopping you working,  but worst of all is taking all your tools in and out of the house every time you do an hour's work on it, a right pain in the a%^e,  it all adds up.

Last Winter I had the mini in primer,  nice and smooth,  ready for paint but ran out of time to do anything.  Couldn't do anything about it till the Spring and unwrapped to find surface rust all over the shell which had to be rubbed back again to bare metal in places before re priming.

All painted now but we have had a good Summer and it made things easier,  but when the sun turns into rain in half an hour it can be very frustrating lol !!

However,  it can be done but more slowly than in a garage so if you factor all that in you should be fine.  What I would say is get a couple of good pvc tarps off t'internet and cover up well every night as it keeps things as dry as possible in between work sessions.

Hope this helps,

Graham

Thanks guys more useful info. Yeah it'd probably just be for storage ATM, but it's good to know it's possible to work on it outside, thanks for the pointers grahama.

If you use epoxy primer its non porous. Its more expensive but it seals the steel so no more problems with leaving the car in primer while other repairs are made. It also has excellent adhesion.
