1981 mini, pre verto clutch.

The clutch on my daughters car has recently got very stiff. She lives an hour away and got a friend to have a look. They found that the slave cylinder was leaking. So I got a new one and fitted it yesterday. I adjusted the clutch stop before trying it as there was 1/4" gap instead of .5mm. But the slave cylinder wasn't the problem as the clutch is still stiff and doesn't return to easily. I was going to return today with wd40 and grease  to lubricate the plunger and pivot points. But I don't know what else to try.

Do i need to adjust the throw out, does anyone know the nut size?  Could it be the clutch is just seized and I need to clutch and brake whilst drving? I want to be prepared to try out all possibilities and need to take appropriate tools/ideas.

Nick P Felixstowe.

Unlikely the clutch is seized its self, more likely the plunger is tight in the alloy casing where the overthrow nuts are and common, lubricate it there and work to and fro, worst case is removal of the cover and the shaft for cleaning but lubricate first and work it.

Thanks for the reply,  just got back. Have used lots of lubrication and working but still stiff so I removed the cotter pin from the where the slave push rod attaches to the clutch arm. The clutch arm is free and the slave pushrod is immovable so i think it must be hydraulics, either the master cylinder or hydraulic hose. I shall change those and it should be sorted.

Both the split pins on the footpedal master cylinder and the clutch arm/slave pushrod are quite inaccessible worth a few swear words each.

Tis the hose. It seems to have perished, black specks in the fluid and it seems to have colapsed internally. Nothing passes through it. Pushed a piece of wire through which opened it up temporarily but soon it  collapsed again and passes nothing. Thanks for your help.
