Hi all,

I am building a 1430 for a track day mini (local club racing) and need to know if a single HIF44 will be sufficient. I also would like to know what cam to go for and with that the rockers?? Pleas note although for racing, it is NOT to the technical levels of miglias.

I am currently running a 1330 with. 45 side and 296 Kent cam, 100bhp at the wheels with a 3.44 FD. I am happy with the performance, but needl some torque. To ad 10-15 bhp while upping the torque will also be welcome.

I will like to use a HIF carb, but prepared to stay with the 45 (prefer not to cut the bulkhead on the new car). I am worried that the power band and high rev range for power of the 296 cam will not sit well with the long stroke engine. Will a 276/286 be better or not, ot any other cam for that matter.

Not an expert, but i am on the same page as you. i think the longer stroke will have a tendancy for less torque lower down, however if you changed your FD to 3.7 you should keep it rev range. If your local track is not particularly long a 3.7 would be a better fit anyway.-   Theoretically a Hif44 and weber 45 can get near identical flow figures BUT both rely on really good and LONG inlet manifolds. I know of more Weber 45 manifolds  in the shorter range ( ie no firewall mods) with reasonable to good flow - but i haven't gone looking.  With those sort of figures you can run 1.5 ( with rollers the preference to reduce side forces)

With the longer stroke and it being a 'playtime' mini, I'd be using a reasonably tame cam, a reasonably tall FD and a Webber on a nice long manifold

A lot of people slate 1.5 rockers on here, but a lot of people don't understand why. You have to decide on what sort of duration, lift and overlap you want to see from your cam, based on valve and port sizes, and only then can you decide whether or not 1.3 will give sufficient lift or whether 1.5 will be needed to get all the gasses in/out. I know 1.7 are available, but there really is no need...
