Hi - I have a 1991 Rover Mini Cooper with SU Carb, and i've had it for about 8 weeks or so. I've noticed that the right indicator ticks on and off very very slow (sometimes, it just stays illuminated and doesnt even tick!). The left indicator works perfectly fine. I've changed the front and rear bulbs but that hasnt fixed it. The weird thing is, the more I rev the engine, the quicker the right indicator flashes - this suggests a power issue perhaps? The hazards flash pretty fast (about twice the speed of the left indicator) - not sure if this is normal or not...

Can anyone tell me if there is a seperate relay for the left and right indicators, or do they share one? and is this also seperate from the hazard relay? and then where these are located if they exist?

Any help would be greatly appreciated - it is slowly driving me insane!!

Thanks,

Aaron.

Probably an earth issue, if it's a 2 terminal flasher unit they work by the current heating up the circuit breaker that does the flashing. More resistance = less current and slower heating, revving the engine increases the output of the alternator - more juice = faster flash.

The front bulb holder is a good place to start looking, it loves to rust. Also, turning on other lights at the same time can give a clue, if they share an earth it'll get even slower, you might even spot a slightly dimmer bulb by using the hazards.

L & R indicators share a relay, which is separate from the hazard relay. I had the slow indicator issue with my '90 Cooper carb, and the same eventual outcome - they just stayed on. Replacing the relay fixed the issue and they now work correctly. The relay is under the steering wheel, and should be the round metal can type. The hazard relay is located in the right hand rear of the engine bay - in mine it's cut into a hole in the (fast disintegrating) bulkhead soundproofing and is the square metal can type.

Thanks both :) I'll check for an earth issue and i'll look at finding and replacing the relays. Will report back. Thanks again :)

I'm not nit picking but there Flasher units not relays they work with a bi-metalic strip heating up and making/breaking contact, just in case you have to order a replacement your sking for the correct item ;D

If left and right run at the same (slow) speed it's almost certain to be the flasher unit, if they run at different speeds then the slow one has a high resistance in the circuit, probably a bad earth , but possibly corrosion in a junction in the wiring to it !
