The summers here regularly get to 37C to 46C for months and I have noticed that the temp can max out fairly quickly on the mini. The previous owner left a clean bottle for pouring water into the radiator since there is no expansion or overflow bottle attached to the car. before I look into a fancy radiator, I would like to start with ditching the fan in exchange for an electric fan. I know that my local auto parts store has electric fans, but they seem a little big to fit on the radiator.

 

Anyone put a setup together from scrapyard parts? Post up some of your setups!

the spi mini's had electric fans bolted to the inner wing, i put 1 in my '90 998 and its been brilliant! dont remove the original fan, just use the electric 1 on a switch for when it starts to get a lil hot!

Did the spi mini's have both fans or just the electric?

both fans on there, it works a treat

You can use bigger fans like a Kenlow etc, mount it on the inner wing so that it pulls air through the radiator. and get a fan controller to activate it (kenlow sell these too) I too would leave the existing fan in place.

You already have the big hole on the left inner wing that gives you the size of what can be fitted. Any fan, preferably linked to a temperature switch and relay, will do the job, just like SPI models (I got one).

I only have a grate on the left inner. Did you stick the fan between the radiator and the inner fender?

No, outside the inner fender ( wing ), this is where Rover fitted them as standard on later models

On a late carb/SPi, the fan is fitted under the wing, behind the wheel, where the crate is replace by a round hole. You can/sould cut the grate to have a better air flow. The image comes from revotec, that sells electric fan kits for minis:

By the way the Revotec fan is not 10 inches but 9. It must be the size of the standard "late carb/SPi fan hole", but you can use any fan that fits, depending on the hole you make. They also seem to sell a fan that can be fitted on the radiator itself, but I would prefer the stock solution of an "external" secondary fan, so that the air flow of the mechanical fan is not reduced by the electric one.

Fitted one to my old mini, admittadely made a bit of a hash out of it but you get the rough idea.
