I will be beginning my engine build next week not sure how long it will take as this is something I haven’t done before. Even so I won’t be in a rush anyway as I do want to get this right first time.

The engine once built will stand for some time maybe 18 months, so bearing this in mind what lubricant/s should I be using during the build.

I plan on using the Kent Cams lube on the cam and followers and once the build is complete I will turn the engine over  straight away to check for oil pressure will this make the cam lube ineffective at the time of first start up,  maybe up  to  18 months later?

I have read about a product which seems pretty popular called Graphogen does this stuff dry out quickly or would it maintain its lubricating properties for a prolonged length of time as I would hate to block up any oil ways with the stuff.

My only other option would be to run the engine out of the car on the bench so to speak for say 30 minutes or so at say 2,500 rpm but I’m not sure if this is a sensible option for someone with my lack of experience also I’m a little unsure what criteria I would have to meet to avoid any damage to the engine and its electrical system and obviously to me.

I don’t know whether my questions are valid so I may be making a total prat of myself however I would definitely rather be safe than sorry.

Any advice or tips would be gratefully received.

Cheers

Stuart

If you use the kent cams lube you should have no issues, it is thick and will stay put, however you could leave the engine and trans mission seperate so you can re lube the cam befor the engine is fitted.

part from that, a few squirts of oil down the bores are a good idea before you attempt to get oil pressure.

the most important thing though is keeping dirt out, plug/ tape over all plug holes exhaust ports.. oil breathers etc.

certainly it wouldnt hurt to run the engine out of the car, which is pretty easy with a mini lump, just pop a rad on etc...

Never thought of that leaving the engine separate from the box could well be the answer. Might get some Graphogen then do you know if it dries out?

Thanks gents
