Grinding Starter Motor?

I have an inertia type starter motor, which when attempting to start the car, just spins and makes a horrible grinding noise.
Ive removed the unit and cleaned up the bendix gear to no avail.
The teeth are worn but ive definitely seen worse.
Is it time for a new motor or is it something else?
Cheers
Rob

Could well be your problem then, the starter ring has the wrong amount of teeth and it has the leading edges for engagement on the wrong side. You should really get a pre engaged starter or change the ring on the flywheel to suit the inertia starter.
Hopefully there is not too much damage to the ring if you decide to change the starter.

Some owners make these changes themselves, it easy enough to do, and easy enough to find out what starter ring you have. an inertia starter needs the lead in on the edge facing away from the engine and the pre engaged needs the lead in on the edge facing toward the engine. Just pop you starter off and have a look at the starter ring on the flywheel. if you see tapered edges on the teeth facing you, you have the wrong starter, if the teeth have flat faces it should be correct, but then it wont explain your problem. If you have everything as it should be, then you need to check your earths and your battery condition. An inertia starter needs full battery potential to spin it fast enough to fully engage the gears or it will just grind.

Yes looks like a inertia ring gear alright, is the bendix clean and free to rotate fully? sometines the starter get weak and wont spin fast enough this couls be bad connections or a lazy starter as Yoda pointed out above
