Goodmorning all,

As you all know winter is coming :P i need a good set of 165 70 r 10 tyres but do not know what make to choose. i currently have Falken but i'm not satisfied with their grip. for example after it rains, and i go for a drive, around corners and roundabouts it skids. Also, even on a flat piece of road between gears it will do " burnouts" (especially between first and second ; second and third).

tyres have 50% tread on them and front ones were changed about 5 months ago and the rear ones about 3 years ago :0

any suggestions?

Thanks

Joseph Abela

Yokohama A008's. They are OK in the wet and are excellent in the dry.

PS I have them fitted on both of my Minis.

Dumop aquajest for higher mileage and wetter conditions, yokos for extreme fun in the dry.

I've just gone from falkens to A008 all round and they seem to give better grip in the wet than the falkens. That's not saying the falkens are rubbish as I had no issues with them and drove the car sensibly in the wet. The yokos just seem to make the car fell a bit better planted on the road. I paid £189.60 fitted and balanced at midland wheels as the wheels did not have tyres fitted to them.

A small update. i have gone round to almost 60% of all tyre shops in malta and gozo (gozo is the sister island of malta). yokos are out of stock except 2 dealers. the price was 66 euro per tyre with fitment and gone up to 120 each! falkens from 55 each went up to 70 euro each. 145's on average range from 44 to 50 each. (shitty makes aswell..)

i started searching for 145/165 12 icnh. they range from 35 euro up to 70 depending on the make...and 165 (the cheapest tyre i found was 70euro)

still am confused and what to choose. to get them from ebay/minispares/minisport etc etc will cost on average 10 euro less per tyre.

i think i'm going to fit 12 inch standard steelies and paint them withe and fit an average quality tyre. is there any advantages on having 12 inch rims?

my gearbox is low ratio'ed so it may help and have a good excuse to fit a pair of mg metro diskbrakes. :)

There's no advantages to fitting 12 wheels, it's just personal styling preferences really.

Probably will make very little to no difference to gearing as the actual rolling radius is almost the same as you would use lower profile tyres.

In Canada I had Yoko 008's on my 77 Mini and they were GREAT  Great in the wet and even better in the dry !  I don't drive the car every day so they lasted me a number of years then I replaced them with Falkens  one word......CRAP !!!  they never get hot enough to stick  and they are just a "killer" in the wet !    everyone I talked to said that they were almost as good as Yoko's     far cry from it !!  spend the extra $$ and get good rubber  get a set of Yoko A008 !
