I was hoping someone might give me some pointers for a needle for the following spec, at the moment its fitted with a BDL and I recently bought a BDR but have not had chance to try it out yet

Carburettor        Single SU HIF44
Engine               A series 1330cc(1275cc overbored +0.060inch using 21253's)
Air Filter             K&N Cone
Inlet Manifold     MG Metro alloy inlet
Cylinder Head   1275cc head stage 2/3
Camshaft           SW10
Rockers             Standard cast
Exhaust             Maniflow LCB, RC twin-box
Ignition               Aldon Yellow

Sorry my topic should read "which needle" lol

The BDL should be able to cope with that spec, it's the metro turbo needle as far as im aware..

How is it running now? With your current needle?

BDL is the standard MG Metro needle not a Turbo one and I doubt it will be rich enough under full power. I have a 1330 with 276 cam Stg 4 Head Aldon yellow And full Maniflow and use a BBC needle in mine. The BDL was dangeriouly on the weak side under full power

I did try a BBC needle but it seemed not as good as the BDL, was hoping the BDR would be somewhere between the 2 eg richer

You will likely need a custom needle for that, what rocker?

BBC needle is a fair bit richer through the range than the BDL

Describe the issues your having and how are you setting the co at idle ?

I would go with a BDK off the shelf. Better a still a BBA with significant mods.

I have a HIF44 on 970 S : this is what I found with needles:

BDR  fitted  too rich over most throttle settings                                                                                                                                                                                                   BCE  too rich at bottom end

BDL  too lean at top end

BCF  too rich mid to top end.

BBW fitted ,  good and is what I am using now

I did a lot of research on this website :http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/

Having narrowed down the needle choice, I bought a few. Then I went driving with a AFR meter stuck up the exhaust, and now am using a BBW which works well over the entire RPM range: I use 8000 rpm quite often.

Hope this is of use to you.
