surely a dropped valve would have properly stuffed everything rather than just a misfire ?

I think what they really mean is a sticky valve rather than one that has properly dropped. Sometimes they keep sticking and get tapped back up by the piston. Worse case is where the piston bends the valve stem and damage is severe. As you say a properly dropped valve would be a trashed engine.

Oh dear this does not sound good, did it not have any warranty from the dealer when you bought it? £100 just to look at it is a blooming RIP OFF! If it is the supermarket petrol (I very much doubt) then best get along to them and see what they have to say about it, as surely they can not be allowed to sell petrol that kills an engine in this way?

Contact yer finance company.

Most have a clause in them that if you have paid a penny more than half, then you can hand it back and not have any comeback...
Not very well known clause... Or citizens advice...

And if they say it is supermarket petrol.. How can they prove this.. Anything in writing.. If so Then contact supermarket fuel owners...
(Strongly doubt they will provide anything in writing about the fuel..) hence it not being actually factual...
