Watchdog are covering the steering fault/problem with the BMW MINI this evening, if anybody here is interested?

Watching the other side. What year BINI does it effect? I may be buying one soon.

It's a problem with the power steering on five different models apparently, the article on it hasn't actually started yet, that's just the info from the trailer/ad.

Its the very first binis that have these problem as far as i know

i'm sure watchdog have covered this on the early bini's as they had a few problems with the pump and when they failed the steering goes really heavy, a few people have crashed because of it.

I am looking at Cooper S  2004/05.

My daily driver Ford Focus is not very well and I can get a supercharged BINI for £4.5k. Better than spending another £13k on a Ford.

I have done 6 of these for friends who moved to the dark side and they are not cheap....

Same for the owners... BMW say no....

It would appear in the US and Canada cars upto 2005 which suffer pump failure get it replaced for free and an extended warrenty on it as well. We get nothing. C'mon BMW grow a pair and accept there is an issue.

 

Saying that i have a 2007 B6 Passat Estate. When they first came out they suffered from injector failure which could lead to a bill upto £2k. This was an issue with the injectors and how they were manufactured as a clever chappie ripped one apart and found the issue. This carried on for a long long time before VW caved in to pressure and every single Passat they was in the years range affected had all of the injectors and loom replaced for free including mine.

 

So the mighty Germans can do something if pressurized enough. We should have the same rights in europe as the Americans and Canadians have.

£200 not too bad. I just paid £500 for injectors and £70 for a starter for my Ford.

I think Richard e Grant deserves an award for his sob story.....I nearly started to care lol

The problem with this type of situation is that all companies that manufacture complex products like cars will have components that fail after a certain period of time. If the car is not serviced regularly by experts for that product then you run the risk of this type of issue occurring.

This is my MCR forum link how to fix it, not very difficult or expensive to do DIY if you use an exchange reconditioned pump:

Power steering whether hydraulic or electric can of course fail on any car and if it does many modern drivers are no longer experienced at driving a car with heavy steering!

This fault only affects the Mk1 R50/53 MINI 2001-2006 with the 'whining' EHPS pump, which Rover engineers preferred for their original R50 MINI design because it gave very direct 'classic Mini' style steering response.......the later Mk2 R56 MINI's were revised by BMW to have a fully electric power steering column which many don't feel is as good for 'Mini' steering feel.

MINI have been replacing the earlier EHPS pumps for some time under 'Goodwill' if you know the right questions to ask as shown many times on the New MINI forums like MINI2 and TotalMINI.com.

I also recently helped a TMF member here with advice to successfully get a free parts and labour pump replacement from MINI UK on a 54 plate MINI Cooper with 73K miles.

My 06 bini suffered from power steering pump failure luckily we we're "given" an extended war entry when we bought it new and the pump was replaced under warenty,
