I own a 95 Sidewalk, which in theory has the milder tuned Spi lump. I know it was completely unmolested before I got it (I'm the 2nd. owner, and I knew the 1st.). The thing is, it "goes like grit off a shovel!" and I remember reading somewhere that sometimes the Cooper engine was dropped into non-Coopers when there was a shortage.

In its untouched state, it would easily top 90 ( also measured against my other car's speedo & my sat nav), now with nothing more than a Maniflow system ("Y piece" back) and de-cat pipe, I've had 100+. Surely not from a 53bhp lump? Obviously none of this on the UK public highway.

Any suggestions, other than stripping it down, would be gratefully received.

Many thanks.

I used to work in a Vauxhall dealership and you could drive 10 Astras all brand new and all the same make, except 1 maybe 2 would go like the next engine size up, down to production tolerences and everything being right. One of the 10 would struggle to pull the skin of a rice pudding though. Either you have a different spec engine or a really good one. Have you put the engine number in the Guessworks website and see what it says.

Mine is the same standard SPi but it will fairly quickly get to 90 (for a 53bhp) 83 on Sat Nav. Thing is at the speed the engine sounds sweet at about 4,250rpm ish
