Morning All.

Ok i did search for this 1st (but being an idiot i'm still going to ask anyway). my car seems to crunch into reverse but only once it warmed up. its normaly fine from cold as i have to reverce out of my drive and some times it just go's into reverce with a big clunk and then is fine. i did a search and found a thread (which now i can't piggin find.) were it was somthing about sync of the gears.......which i didn't understand in the slightest but basical someone said just wait a sec or two after putting it into neutral then try reverse so i'll try that and Guessworks suggests changing the oil in the clutch system as the fluid degrades after time. So i think my clutch oil needs replacing.

Problem is i don't know what oil to use. i mean i can figure out how to do it (open the bleen nipple on the slave cylinder and start pumping the pedal with the cap off the master cylinder) but i need to know the oil grade.

My other question is on sucktion. my engine sucks......i mean it really dose. i was cheacking a few things yesterday and took the rocker cover off. plonked it back on. put a wee bit of oil in. then started the car with the oil filler cap off (got the air filter type that i know needs changing) and it idel-ed lovely then i put the cap back on i could hear it rev down and idel werid. so i took the cap off again and stuck my hand over the hole (in retrospect i have no idea why) and it really sucks almost stalled the engine. is that meant to happen.....i mean the sucktion. its was kinda alot. also why dose it suck so much. is it beacuse of the carb pipe (theres a pipe that connects to the crank case to an oil/flame trap thing then to the carb) or is it something worse. would getting one of thoses engine breather help. i know their a little poinltess (i asked before and was told their only really for cars were top profomace is needed or somthing along thoses lines) but still seems like an idea.

Anyway Cheers for any info.

Reverse will crunch if the clutch isn't disengaging properly, or if you try to put it into reverse too quickly. For the clutch you need DOT 4 brake fluid. It's the normal stuff they sell in Halfords and car spares shops.

Suction. There should be some. The oil filler cap is vented to allow some air into the system. The engine crank case as you rightly point out is connected to the carb inlet via the flame trap. Taking the oil cap off lets too much air in and weakens the mixture.

It sounds like your Mini needs a tune up if making it run lean improves things. Or maybe you had the choke out? What's the fuel consumption like?

no got the mixture rich. i did a bit of tuning after my mate garry told me how to do it. he has a tr7 or somthing with the same sort of carb. so dose need a bit of a bit more of an ajustment. i know i need a new oil filler cap filter as i have a 53,000 mile car and when i got it, it still had the factory fitted air filter. so it needs changing.

fuel consumption.......eerrrmmmm.......depedens. somtimes its ok. can go for a few days pottering about on £5 worth. but yesterday i had to go to norwitch which is around 40 mile round trip. did 70...ish all the way there (20 miles) and 50 all the way back as my dad's leg is bad and he dosen't like my car. used (ready) from the 1st line after half a tank (so 3rd quarter) to the half line again (so i think about 1/4 of a tank) which seems a little thursty for a 998 but i was going flat out all the way there. but i've had half a tank last 100 miles when i did the Jamie's Run a few weeks back.
