Hi and welcome to TMF, do a compression test first if you feel all of the electrical items are fine. It is possible the HG is on the way out. Not uncommon.

It could well be simple backfiring due to incorrect timing (well, maybe not, as you have checked it), wrong mixture, or maybe leaky inlet valves. That will certainly generate pops in the carburettor! But check things like the manifold nuts for tightness, it could be a leak. And, the all too common exhaust to manifold joint will cause severely bad running and lots of pops. I think I would check that first.

My bet is on a head gasket failure between Cylinders 2 and 3. This is particularly loud with a tubular sport manifold.

+1 also possibility of nice flames out the carb if you take off the air filter.

I took the eyebrows of an ex girlfriend doing that. It was a mk3 Capri and I though the carb butterfly was stuck. I got her to lean over and look right down into the carb as I revved the engine. She was convinced I had done it on purpose. It may have had something to do with her being my ex shortly after thatNow why would i want to do that.?????
