Hi, I've had my A reg Mayfair for 5 years. After crashing it we then re-built it for imm 2011. Had no problems with it and it even went to Italy this year for the imm. However, Friday night I was out driving and a funny popping noise was coming from the engine. The car was still running fine but everytime I put my foot down to accelerate, away from lights etc, I had to really put my foot down just to get some speed up. I've checked leads, plugs and timing and all are good. The noise seems to be coming from the carb but I'm not entirely convinced. Could it be the head gasket?

Hi and welcome to TMF, do a compression test first if you feel all of the electrical items are fine. It is possible the HG is on the way out. Not uncommon.

It could well be simple backfiring due to incorrect timing (well, maybe not, as you have checked it), wrong mixture, or maybe leaky inlet valves. That will certainly generate pops in the carburettor! But check things like the manifold nuts for tightness, it could be a leak. And, the all too common exhaust to manifold joint will cause severely bad running and lots of pops. I think I would check that first.

My bet is on a head gasket failure between Cylinders 2 and 3. This is particularly loud with a tubular sport manifold.

+1 also possibility of nice flames out the carb if you take off the air filter.

I took the eyebrows of an ex girlfriend doing that. It was a mk3 Capri and I though the carb butterfly was stuck. I got her to lean over and look right down into the carb as I revved the engine. She was convinced I had done it on purpose. It may have had something to do with her being my ex shortly after that :-)

Cheers for your help guys. If anyone needs sound system help let me know. I'm running 2x 1200w 12" vibe subs of a 400w amp and 2x vibe 6x9s off the head unit. Generates 130db. Got a lovely trophy from Italy.
