I have removed an engine from a 1 owner 1982 mg metro.it has done 54000 miles and been in the car stood uo inside a dry garage for 20 years.i am stripping it down and renewing all seals, gaskets etc. How etc the engine number plate has rotted away. All the logbook says the engine number is several numbers. How will I find out if its a high compression unit etc.i am hoping its the 72 bhp version but wanted to see if I can find out somehow.

Simple. Measure & calculate. To see if it is a 72 bhp engine you will also need to know which cam is fitted and the only way to be sure is to take it out and see which marking rings it has.
