Just assembled a mini spares cross-pin diff for my gearbox today, brand new unit with all new gears, thrust washers, etc. went together a treat with no problems and then i bolted down my crown wheel and torqued up to 60ft/lbs as stated on the sheet supplied. the gears run when turning either of the output shafts but to be honest they are quite rough. (output shafts are used ones from my standard diff, doesn't seem to be any problems with them) The problem i'm having is when i turn them they will run fine for a few turns and then lock up as if something inside is catching, it seems like there's no real pattern to it. On closer inspection the crown wheel side shaft has a slight bit of lateral play in it, as if it isn't spaced enough, but i can't see how this would cause a problem?  note that this is with the new fibre washers in place too! the other output shaft is sitting and spinning lovely.

Has anybody had a problem like this before? maybe one for the gearbox gurus out there.....

cheers, Ben.

I've fitted a few and sometimes this happens.  The one I ftted to my estate was so notchy I took it all apart, carefully inspected each planet gear for burrs and dirt particles and reassembled it and it still felt awful.

Figuring that the torque geing put through it in the car is far greater than I can manage by hand, and it's also immersed in an oil bath during operation I fitted it anyway.  Many miles later it is fine.

They do this when fitted with brand new mica thrust washers behind the planets, it's a good plan to use slightly worn ones to allow some lash.

Cheers guys, i'm just slightly worried about the output shaft on the crown wheel side. It has quite a bit of play when it's assembled, should it be like this? Or is it in need of a new bronze Bush on the C.W?

I had similar problems when I built my X-pin up but not as bad as it locking up (just very notchy). My solution to get rid of most of the notchyness was to coat the planets in some very fine valve grinding paste and run it in using an electric drill (obviously dismantling and cleaning it thoroughly before reassembling and fitting it to the gearbox). Find that thread here... http://www.theminifo...snt-feel-right/
