I am struggling to connect my megajolt and laptop....when I plug in the USB cable I get a message 'device driver software was not successfully installed'

I'm at the garage trying to get timing set now, so I'm a little red-faced!

Not previously used megajolt as it was installed when I bought the car!

Sounds like it might be your USB adapter, does it do that with or without the MJ connected? You could try checking the com port settings for the USB  & in the MJ configurator match.

That's with MJ connected. I have got the right com port selected on MJ itself.

Is it the right version MJ program, it will tell you what the firmware version is under the "about" menu if the connection is good.

Here's a screenshot of the messages I get when I plug in the megajolt to the laptop.

The 'about' menu says 'Could not read controller version: Could not open port'

My usb to serial dongle I used for connecting to cisco devices needed a specific driver for it using Windows 7 Enterprise. Try and search internet for the correct driver if your USB to serial has any name or something printed on it. Or buy a new one from maplins, they are only a few quid.

Yup, your problem is with the USB to serial adapter, not the MJ.

I had no luck with the adapter from Maplins, so bought the cheapest one I could find on eBay and it worked a treat.

I ditched the maplin cable and got a couple of ebay specials.  I now get a 'driver installed' type message, but still get no data from the megajolt box - either live data or on-screen runtime data.

Considering reverting back to dizzy with how much of a PITA this bloody megajolt is!

Do you have anything else to test the serial cable on? Are the speed settings correct on your megajolt app? It should be something like 9600baud rate, data bits 8, stop bis 1, parity none, flow control xon/xoff - they are the usual typical settings, the only thing I have ever had to change is the baud rate in about 15 years of working with telecomms and lately cisco networking devices. I've used megajolt and Emerald on my Win 7 laptop with usb to serial. Maybe pop into local computer shop if you have one near you so they can test your serial connection on something else. Stick with the ECU, its a very good setup!

Silly question, have you got power getting to your MJ box? Should have a little green light coming on.

I can't see a green light on, but I can't see where the green led is. It's a smaller box than the ones I've seen with a green light.

The rev counter is working and that comes from the megajolt box....
