Looking for a possible alternative for an MG metro camshaft for my 998cc rebuild as I can't seem to find any! Any suggestions for which ones will be just as good, or even better?

266 is a modern MG cam 276 might be a bit peaky in a 998, ok in my 1330 but 998 may need a fair bit more revving

Whats the full spec of the engine going to be ?

Kent KC500 is an MG Metro profile.

I may have some kicking about in the shed - I'll take a look over the weekend.

The 276 is lairy compared to the MG metro cam

Even the 266 has more bite

As above, KC500 is the MG metro profile.

It really depends on the rest of the build ie head mods or a better head altogether, inlet manifold and carb, exhaust etc and ultimately what your going to use the engine for.the advice so far on cam choice is sound and well proven to work

So you have tried both back to back at some time ? I have one in my 1330 seems strange why a cam with a lesser profile and duration should have more bite? unless your talking about the install in the 998cc engine. I thought the 266 was a cam that was more torquey and the 276 was the faster road cam.Tell me more

Good cams for a 998 are: MG Metro, Kent 266, Swiftune SW5, Piper 270, BMC710.

A good cam I've used in a 998 Cooper was a Cooper 'S' 510.

There is, IMHO, a lot of nonsense talked about cams. In a race or rally car the small differences can be seen in terms of lap times or special stage times, but on the public roads the differences are minimal and a hotter cam can quite easily make a car slower in acceleration due to the power/torque band being narrower.

It is quite possible that a really accurate and well-matched engine build will yield more power in a smoother manner than one with a 'hotter' cam. So many engines are 'thrown together' without the necessary measuring and correct machining being done that they give poor results.

the key to performance lies more in the gas-flowing of the head than just the cam.

Given that I cant find a Kent, Swiftune, Piper, or BMC for under £150 should I go with an MG metro for £70? I know it's a lot but I need one fairly urgently!

Yes, then you'll have a really great cam.

Time it in at 112 degrees ATDC to allow for 2 degrees of chain stretch from the new chain thus achieving the nominal 110 degrees ATDC.

I think you mean 108 to allow for stretch. I actually prefer 106 for the MG cam.

The MG Metro cam is a great cam for the money. You can get them for less, around £20-30 at shows, but like you say you need one urgently.

Yes, it's interesting that BMC/Rover, or whatever they were calling themselves that week, specify 110, but the almost similar Kent ones are specified as 106.

I've not done any tests and tend to set them to manufacturers' nominal.

I should have said 108 to get 110. Forgive the error please.

Sorry was in a rush at work should have stated it better. I meant to say the 266 has more bite than the MG metro cam.

by the way yes I have all these three cams, in a small bore a 276 can be fantastic if you're the one that likes to rev the engine all the time, it gives its best above 4.5k rpm
