It would have left the factory with a verto clutch. The verto slave cylinder should sit at a 45 degreeish angle (it's horizontal on the pre verto).

without stripping it to find out, arent the cars with pre-engaged starters verto clutches / flywheels, as ring gear and starter teeth are differant pitch??

You can get verto or diaphragm style flywheels with the earlier type ring gear. There is alot of mix and match with flywheels/starters/ring gears
The best way to tell is by the type of slave cylinder or the length of the clutch arm. The diaphragm style (commonly known as pre-verto) has a long clutch arm with a flatter mounted slave cylinder, but the verto assembly uses a shorter clutch arm and has the slave cylinder mounted on more of an angle on the clutch cover. (damn I hope I got that the correct way around lol)
I only know because I have recently converted from verto to diaphragm.

Some of the early A+ engines had diaphragm clutches (not sure if the Mini followed the rule). I have a 1275 A+ out of an Allegro that is a diaphragm setup rather than verto. I think there was a sort of 'cross-over period' where they still used left over parts off the shelf whilst developing the verto system for the early A+ engines
EDIT: can I have two hob nobs now???
