Is This A Ballast Or Non Ballast Coil?

Looks like faded White/yellow and White/Pink so those indicate ballast wiring, coil should read 1.5ohms on the + and - terminals, GCL143 was original equipment and GCL217 was the aftermarket replacement Your coil says 12v on it though? in which case it will read 3.5ohms on the + and - terminals
Put a voltmeter on the + it should read 9v when switched on. If it does indeed read 9v switched on then your not getting the best spark from the 12v coil running at 9v.

Just googled the number on the coil, found this which seems to indicate its a ballasted coil
Hi
According to my Lucas cross reference books your AC Delco ignition coil, part number 7992190 is inter-changeable with Lucas part number DLB102.
Lucas recommends the DLB102 for the Triumph Stag from 1970–77.
The DLB102 coil is designed to operate in conjunction with a ballast resistor which on the Mk1 Stag is a ceramic block type resistor mounted under the bonnet, while on the Mk2 Stag’s the resistor is in the form a length of resistive wire built into the wiring harness, and therefore cannot be seen.

well I think the coil is knackered as the ht lead is covered in oil.

the reading is 12v so non ballast?

I'm getting readings from the coil....................2.1 ohms and 10.5v
If i take it voltage reading from the other end of the wire near the starter solenoid I get a 12v reading.

the white/pink should be the ballasted wire that's the one that should read about 9 volts.
the white/yellow is the ballast byepass it connects to the solenoid and should only be live 12v when the starter is spinning.

it looks brown to me not pink!
The readings I posted are what I was getting, every reading was in between 9 or 12v and 1.5ohm to 3ohm.
I triple checked everything.
Just got dropped home by the AA as it kept dying, The AA guy said he's pretty sure the coil is no good, So I need a new one but right now I'm not sure which one to get!

Right I stripped back the tape covering the wires and took some pictures.
The + side of the coil has a white wire on the top and yellow/white, and a pink/white cable on the bottom.
The - side has a black/white wire.
The yellow/white wire goes to the solenoid and I think the pink/white runs to the fuse box I think!!
Can someone take a look and and confirm this and tell me what type of ballast I have please!

Your wiring is confusing
White wires are if original ignition switched non fused 12v
White/pink is a ballast resisted wire it supplies a reduced voltage to a ballast coil whilst running
white/yellow is a ballast byepass is only goes live when the starter is spinning and provides a higher voltage to the coil to aid starting.
You should not have a white and a white/pink going to the coil ..
personally I would check if the white wire gives full 12v when ignition switched on, if so then tape up the white/pink and white/yellow so they are isolated.
Fit a new non ballast 12v coil and use the white wire on the positive and the white/black on the negative

I'll check when I get home from work.
If I disconnected the white/yellow, white/pink connector but left the white plugged in, will it start?

should start with them all plugged in, but good chance your coil is stuffed..
from the reference number on it the coil is a ballast coil, and if that white wire is 12v then you've been running it at to high a voltage so its probably fried

I know it's stuffed, if I take out the yellow/pink wires should it start just with the 12v wire?
so what should I get ballast or non?

get a 12v non ballast and run it just on the white wire, you need to make sure that white wire is live with ignition on though.
Its odd you have white, white/pink and white/yellow should not have all 3 so I'm confused why you have a white wire there

no idea, it was like that when I bought the car.
I'm planning on tidying up all the wiring as it's a mess!
Thanks for your help!
