I had my Mini cleaned by a jet wash company today. I noticed some alarming looking rust I hadn't seen before. (I'm attaching two photos: one was taken in the summer, the other today.)

How bad does it look to you? How easy is it to fix? How expensive?

If it is rust and not a paint reaction then bad, the wing will need replacing eventually.

Definitely rust. New wing and possibly scuttle corner if it has spread.

thats rust and as probally been working its way through the panel for months.

new wing and possible scuttle corner / under scuttle panel too. check the air vent area and door post as they usually all start to go around the same time.

Looks like water has got behind it at some point making the area flake and rust quicker. Jet wash might not of helped. Wing and maybe new scuttle too.

Never mind the rust, what on earth were you thinking of letting someone with a jet wash near a classic mini??  :o

It's a classic car, so wash it by hand with a quality car shampoo and a soft wash cloth. A high pressure jet wash is likely to strip paint, blast rustproofing away and get moisture into seams and other unwanted areas, making your corrosion problems worse.

See if you can push a small screwdriver through the rust. If you can it will need a new wing. Poke at the scuttle panel with the same screwdriver. If it goes through a new scuttle panel end is needed.

AS for price, a genuine wing is c.£80, scuttle end would be c. £15. The screen has to come out to do a scuttle end. time is in the region of 4 hours for  cutting, welding and grinding back (assuming no more rust is found in the inner wing or front panel). The allow for re-painting wing & scuttle. Say around £275 for the whole job if no other rust is found.
