Hello all,
The Mini has developed a loud knocking or 'clunk' when turning the wheel from centre to either the left or the right. There are no other knocking noises as far as I can hear until the wheel reaches the centre cross over point again.
There may be a slight bit of resistance before the clunk but I'm not 100% sure, if there is it is only small.
It has also developed a relatively large dead zone in the steering, maybe 35-40 degrees (approximately).
This has all happened suddenly, the car was taken on a run for around 20 miles with no problems - it was only when I hopped into the Mini again to pop out that this problem became apparent.
Ay ideas?
Thanks you in advance,
Dan.

check the pinch bolt holding the steering column on to the rack is tight. Also check the U bolts holding the rack to the front of the toe board are tight. Then get some one to hold the steering wheel tight and try and turn the road wheels by hand looking and feeling for any play (on a mini there should be none when the steering wheels held tight).
I personally would not drive it on the road until its been identified and fixed for obvious reasons!

Hi Rob,
Thank you for the quick reply, I will check the things you mentioned and report back tomorrow.
I agree with you regarding driving it as it is now, it won't be used again until it is sorted.
Many thanks.
