Ok Ive a few questions id like some help with.

First of all cams and rings. identifying them.

Ive got a few cams lying around and would like to know what there from.

1> slot drive, 1/2 inch lobes, fuel pump lobe present, no rings.
I think its a standard      A plus 998cc ???????????

2> pin drive,  3/8 lobes, fuel pump lobe present, 1 ring
Im thinking 997cc cooper cam????????????

3> slot drive  1/2 lobes, fuel pump lobe present, 2 rings.
      mg metro ??????????

4> pin drive, 1/2 lobes, fuel pump lobe present, 3 rings  marked en32
 998cc cooper 731 ??????????

now the crank bit.

Well ive a box off bits that came in a deal a few months ago, was told it was a works 997cc engine but i took that with a pinch of salt.
Anyway

block is a 12a497  which i beleive to be a 998 cooper as its pre A plus. bored .020 with a main strap on it,  Its pre 1965, going on the old old style timing cover without the strengthening recesses

pistons are .020 d tops 3 ring

rods are 12g127

cam is the one ive spoke of above
4> pin drive, 1/2 lobes, fuel pump lobe present, 3 rings   marked en32
 998cc cooper 731 ??????????

Crank
en16
its been balanced at some point and the original numbers are missing, its be restamped aeg601, i cannot find anywhere what this is/ the stamping looks professional

what could it be???????????

my ideal is to use the engine but get the block pocketed so i can bolt on a 12g940 and mate it to a 1275gt c/r box i have
run it on a hif44 or a hs6.
which should make a reasonable fast road mini.
?????

AC Dodd posted some camshaft photos recently which might help with identification : http://www.theminifo...-identification

The pin drive cam with 3 rings is 731, you can get these with 3/8 and 1/2 inch wide lobes.

If it is MG Metro, it'll have a ¼" Groove in it. And yes it is slot drive and has the fuel pump lobe.

It'll be a 998 or 1098 block. A 998 Cooper block is the same as any other pre A+ 998 block.

Always be wary that a cam isn't a regrind when trying to identify it. I suppose it's less likely if the bands say it's something a bit more exotic, and you'll usually find the profile number stamped on the end if it has been ground.

Asssuming not regrinds and they are factory originals;

Cam 1, Stock A+ 1275 profile.

Cam 3 A+848/998 low compression cam. 2 rings between lobes 3&4. Or A+ 1275 sprite cam 2 rings between lobes 7&8. Both these 2 cams work much better with 1.5 rockers installed even better on a 998. So, although seemingly stock a verry good choice for a fast road engine but must be used with 1.5 rockers to get it to work.

are you sure???

as some 998cc pre A plus blocks came with the mechanical fuel pumps so had the hole at the back.

this block is blanked off in the casting  as the coopers had electric fuel pumps????

I've seen mid 1960's onwards 998 blocks with the hole for the petrol pump blanked off with a plate. Don't know why they would have had this as UK Mini's certainly didn't have the mechanical petrol pump at the time.
