I am replacing the chrome bezel on a speedo, I have removed the old one prizing it off with a screwdriver, does anyone know of an easy way to fit the new bezel in place without damaging the chrome on the bezel face.

I assume you mean the early, center binnacle, large face speedometer and not the later ones positioned in front of the driver.
There are no tangs on those to secure them. Early bezels were "sharp" on their exposed surfaces while the Mk2 and later used a rounded top bezel. While you can improvise with pliers or wrenches, you run the risk of damaging the chrome plating. Therefore, what I do is rest the gauge (face down) on a towel spread over a sheet of cardboard on a work bench. Use a drift/punch and a small hammer to peen the bezel inward at three locations (more or less) evenly spaced around the perimeter of the back of the bezel. Basically just use the drift/punch to duplicate the dimpled in areas you pried up on the old bezel. Several gentle blows with the hammer are safer and better than one heavy blow.
