  • Mini 1959-69
ADO 15 versions – Austin, Morris, Mini Cooper
  • Mini 1977-1981
ADO 20 versions badged Mini – Longbridge build only not Seneffe

I think BMH only have these records above, sadly once BL took over BMC in 1969 the record keeping was not so good or kept archived for the long term.

You might be able to get the build date if you're lucky and it'll cost you £6 - http://www.heritage-...ch-service.html

I got the build date for our Mk 3 S which was built in March 1971, however, that's all the information I could get. For my 1983 & 1984 Maestros, I could also get paint colour, interior trim colour and despatch (from Cowley) date.

It might be worth checking the reg number. You can find out the area it came from from the prefix letters eg GWC 999T. This bold bit should give you an idea of the area it was registered in (I believe GWC came from Chelmsford - or certainly Essex) - you should then be able to ascertain which dealers were around in that area at that time.

Not an exact science, but it might help

One I know of in the Putney area was H L Austin of Wandsworth. They are Skoda dealers now but used to sell Minis. Apparently they supplied them to John Cooper Garages. My Minis are MOTed there. Perhaps they might have sales records.

I believe the Mini production records were computerised from 1968 onwards and during the early 1970's very little information is in the records that BMIHT still have.

From the above I presume your car is registered as an Austin? What are the first three letters of your registration? Both of these could be valuable clues to the dealership and an internet search on your registration probably won't give the full registration area, you need a proper period registration book for that.

Incidentally, H L Austin & Son were Austin retail dealers in Wandsworth (SW18), not Putney (SW15).

I did actually say that H L Austin were in Wandsworth but the distance of their location from Putney is so tiny (less than a mile from East Putney Station) that I cannot think they had too many rivals for Putney residents. Still worth checking for records.

Think again. Around this time there were four Austin dealerships in SW15 and three in SW18.
