Hi

What's involved in changing a remote change gearbox to pudding stirrer change

Is it just a case of changing the rear diff section

Ok thanks, the hole in the floor is not a problem but casing is, thanks

People have done it, but it's not really a 'proper engineering' approach. As stated, the hole in the floor is different, but the BIG and very real problem is that the rear section of the Diff casing was machined together at the Factory with the gearbox so that the bearing holes are perfectly aligned. They were line bored and the gasket faces machined as an assembly. You might be lucky that another rear section is 'somewhere near' when bolted up - but it's a gamble and you might end up with misaligned bearings which will work - for a while. Also you may end up with a bigger oil leak than Minis sometimes have.
You ideally need a complete casing, but not all of the later bits fit the early case - the gearbox guru might come along with help.

Best regards,
Ian

Actually the often mentioned situation regarding the diff rear cover being a matched component is not quite as critical as is often alluded to.
Yes, it is a matched pair of parts, but if a non-matched pair are assembled the issue is not the big diameter, it's the possible uneveness of the end surfaces where the end plates are bolted on. The end plates clamp the large diff bearings and so long as the surfaces are within about 0.001" of flat at both ends the end covers will clamp up OK.
However, you can get the ends skimmed flat on a milling machine if you don't have a matched pair of components. Just set the pre-load shims accurately.

I've swapped diff housings about between several gearboxes and never had a problem.

If you can find a magic wand gearbox to start with it make life a lot easier - I do just happen to have one spare...

You definitely need another hole in the floor, but not sure about the need for a different gearbox casing, depends on what you have.

If it's a 22G1128 casing for mini (not 1100) remote alloy gearchange then there was a factory set of parts for this which made it into a 'magic wand' box, I think these were used on 850's in the early 70's before the rod change box became standard issue.

The 22g1128 is a four syncro box.

this came as a remote change and a rod change and also came as a wand change but is very rare.

it had a 927 lay gear and a 3.7 diff with rubber couplins

if you need one i have one
