Hi there, having problems selecting gears after an engine change.

Engine 1275

Rod change

I can select 3rd and 4th gear only

cant get 1st or second or even reverse.

Next step is to try selecting gears straight from the box using the selector sticking out the engine.

Any other ideas or things that might be of help.

Thanks Joe

Yes. It feels as if I can select all the gears. That's with it running or not running. But only engages in 3rd and 4th.

Just to Point out. I took the car on the road. Thought it was a bit slow getting away in first. Changed to second then third. That's when I realized it was third I set off in when the car screamed help I'm third again !

Take the gearstick out and see if the ball is still on the end of it...

Right the stick looks ok complete with ball. Will take a pic in a min.

Bit of a thought though, if you push the lever forward and engage say 3rd gear, you can move the stick left to right quite easily. Cant seen to find a slot for 1st even if you just slightly pull it out and try to find another slot. :(

Easy fix - it is likely that you have put the gearbox selector rod back in 180 degrees out.  Take out the gearstick knock out the roll pin on the rod coupling at the back of the gearbox and turn the rod 180 degrees, put the roll pin back in, put gearstick back in and select all the gears as normal.

Looks like that's sorted it, need to get it on the road to give a check out, but thanks for the replies chaps, love car forums.

Glad to be able to help.  I can imagine your frustration - the same thing happened to me before.
