I've got a 1100 from a '77 Clubby sat in my garage. It works but needs a bit of TLC. I was going to give it a overhaul and leave as It is. But if I was to mod it, what are the options? bigger head?

Like any other mini really, the first thing to do is to renew the ignition components and give it a full service to make sure that you're getting the most out of the standard set up in the first place. Then fit a well developed stage one kit to improve gas flow and the engines ability to breathe, only then should you move onto a bigger/upgraded head. Personally though in order to get the most out of any upgraded head, I'd always combine it with fitting a warmer cam as well, but then unfortunately replacing the cam also means that the engine has to come out.

When modding the 1100 (it should be the 1098 of course) remember that the rev limit on those engines is around 6200 rpm maximum. So any cam change needs to reflect this with peak power being produced at around 5700 to 5800 rpm.

I have an mg metro exhaust manifold in the for sale section. This could make a cheap but worthwhile improvement :)

I fitted what is now known as a stage 1 kit to mine with a refurbished 12G202 (the standard head on a 1098cc) on mine, and even with the standard cam perceptively it was better than the 998cc which replaced it.

Keith Calver ran a series of mods on an 1098cc and got some pretty good results.

As Peter (Cooperman) and AVV IT said, stick with a mild cam and a decent head and it's a lovely little motor.

Phil.

A good spec for a 1098 is something like:

MG Metro or Kent 266 cam

12G295 mildly gas-flowed head,

998 Cooper exhaust system inc. 3 into 1 manifold

Twin HS2 carbs

10.2:1 Compression Ratio

That should give something like 55 bhp at 5700 rpm with a lot more torque than a 998 lower down the rev range.

Use something like a 3.2:1 FDR and it would be a lovely road car.

Wouldn't be a problem as it's sat on a subframe next to my mini. I'm planning on using it while my 1380 is out and getting overhauled. And then eventually it's going back into the original shell once the body work is done.

It's running standard head and cam.

HIF 44 with K & N cone, manifold exhaust with lcb if I remember correctly.

The standard 1098 cam (assuming it is the AEA 630) is perfect - it handles the rev limit nicely.  You could fit an MG Metro cam - but then you would be tempted to rev higher and break the crank......   A 940 head is absolutely ideal on this engine - with a single 1.5" carb on a GOOD inlet manifold.    Just check the exhaust valves have 320 thou clearance before fitting.  If not - sink them into the head till they DO have that clearance.
