Hey , i have an Austin Mini 1000 1979, it is in a very good condition, but my heater is not working ... i recently changed the heater valve and heater cable, when i click the On button on the matrix , it starts working without a problem! But it blows cold air ! In the left air vent when im touching it, it feels that warm air is passing in the hoses but its not blowing enough ...(barely feel the hot air)
And i believe that the water flows through the hoses -pipes beacause when i touch them their hot..
What is the problem , as i want to get this fixed now on winter !

???

Patience my friend! some of us have to work during the day!!!

You may find that there is an air lock in the matrix. Try removing the hose from the tap, and place the tap in the on position, then connect a garden hose to the tap and run water through the system gently to push any trapped air out. once it is clear, remove water supply and refit everything and it should start working.

As above

You have an air lock in your matrix

When refilling do it slowly with the heater fully open and on run the engine while doing it this should sort it.

Hi, sorry for hijacking but I think I may have the same or similar problem. My heater also doesn't blow out hot air but does blow out some kind of smoke and a nasty smell?

I did have a leak in the passenger foot well that I suspect is linked.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

you will most likely need to replace your heater matrix. it has a leak and is allowing coolant out and air in. This is crucial as it will affect engine cooling too eventually due to coolant loss and low pressure in the cooling system.

Smoke or a nasty smell from the heater points towards the blower motor being burnt out, that is unless you've recently fitted a new matrix, in which case you sometimes get a smokey haze and smell for a while, whilst the oil film coating on the new matrix burns off. I'd suggest that a removal and strip down of the heater might be in order, to see what's going on inside it.

Just to point out AVV IT. the recent post mentioned a fluid leak in the car and dont forget some people confuse "smoke" and "steam" it may be prudent to ask if the smell is sweet or acrid to get a better idea of what is wrong.

I think your point is good though and worth consideration.

A good point you make!!

If the matrix is leaking inside the heater, then the other thing to look for is condensation appearing on the windscreen when the heater/blowers are on. Essentially demisters that actually do more misting, than de-misting!! If the matrix is badly corroded it will not only leak ,but may also become blocked and stop any heat being produced as well.

Either way a strip down of the heater, or at least a removal of the matrix with the heater still in situ wouldn't be a bad idea, to get a better idea as to what's actually going on. Mine stopped blowing out hot air once, it also started leaking coolant into the foot well and misting up the windscreen as well. This is what the matrix looked like when I removed it:  :ohno:

Now my problem is solved, it blows hot air and its working good. But the left air vent is barely blowing hot air , is that a block somewhere ?

is the vent duct open some where causing the air to come out under the dash?

Tommorow i will try the garden hose trick !
Question : i will remove the hose from the heater valve and connect it to the garden hose.... next i will set the heater valve to ON possition, and with the garden hose on, i will see water getting off the heater valve ?
