Hey all. Can you get different lengths of fan belt?

The reason I ask is the belt I have on at the moment is coming up to about 1500 miles old and it's really slack, you can move both pulleys with ease and it'll squeal like a piggy at times. The adjustment is at it's max! When I put the belt on I don't remember how much room was left on the adjuster. Surely it can't stretch that much?? It's been fine these past few months until about 2-309 miles ago. Any ideas?

They don't stretch all that much but the rubber wears down and so it actually gets physically smaller and doesn't grip the groove any more.  If it's sitting at the bottom of the groove in any pulley then it's dead.  Yes you can get different lengths, the part number of any given belt is usually the length in mm.  If it's slack after 1500 miles with no adjustment left it sounds like you have used a belt that was a tad too long in the first place.

Mini Spares list a few differant lengths of belt depending on what water pump pulley you have and weather you have an alternator or dynamo.

Most post 1980 A+ cars use a 10825 belt. You should find a number on your existing belt. It may be just three numbers eg 8??. This is the length of the belt. Just pick on with a smaller number and you should be OK.

The last 3 numbers of the part number of the belt is its total length in cms.

You can set the alternator in about the right final position with no fan belt on, then use a piece of washing line cord to measure the length you need.

I've never changed the belt on mine. Done 20k in my ownership and still not at max adjustmen No squeaks or cracks.

As an aside, the key to making a fan belt last a long time is to make absolutely sure the 3 belt pulleys are exactly in line. The alternator pulley is often a few mm out of line and this heats up the belt which then wears quickly.

Use shims/washers as spacers when necessary to get the absolutely correct alignment.
