Hi guys after a disasterous first attempt at welding in my new A-post and stiffener im having to start again as my welding sucked and my plug welds didnt penetrate enough and were weak, so ive took the panels apart and i am going to start again,,, i have drilled bigger 8mm holes now but need some advice on plug welding techniques

i know this varies but what power setting approx on a 130 mig?

Do i start from the center of the drilled hole and work my way out?

or any other tips would be very helpfull thanks?

8 mm is large, i normally do them at 1/4". Power setting high with wire speed to match. I always try to start in the centre or slightly higher then puddle the metal until the hole is filled. You will need high power though to get decent penetration.

How many power settings does your welder have? Mine has six and I use 3 for plug welds with a slightly faster wire speed than normal welding. I start in the centre and hold the weld there for a short time then work your way out

A small amount, if you start at the top of the hole then gently bring the torch back. Or if in the centre just a small amount of up and down. You will see when you try it on a hole. Don't hold the torch on for too long or you will burn through so have a bit more practise until you are happy.

With the power on high and the wire speed turned up it will fill the hole very quickly.
