Thanks for all the advice! Unfortunately I was not able to pull the engine out due to lack of skill and having no hoist to do it with. I spent a few hours sanding things back removing everything I could and masking everything I didn't want painted and it has come out looking reasonably good. Not perfect but far, far better than it was before. Once again, thanks for all the tips!
