Effectively the above but don't use a rag contaminated with oil or the like as it won't be much good.

I personally use gun wash on clean tack rags, works as well as any panel wipe I have used, just seems to be a little cheaper.

White spirit tends to not evaporate quick enough to remove everything, if it is bare metal I would use some cheap thinners on a clean rag and keep wiping till clean, then go over it again with panel wipe and tack rags before painting. Use an epoxy primer of you are leaving it a while before finishing.

Etch primer really needs a top coat of some type to keep moisture out, you could just put a coat of aerosol paint on it then flat it off when painting car properly. But a coat of epoxy would be much better.

you mean just spray the panel with an old aerosol only or etch aswell?

Can you still get panel wipe? I still have a few litres, bit bought it years ago. Dirt cheap and made for cleaning down before spraying. Just make sure its a well ventilated area or you will float out afterwards.

Panel wipe is low voc now so not to bad, you can even get water based panel wipe. You will have more fumes and smell with the painting.
