Hi all,

Today i went to a car trader to have a look at a 1993 mini mayfair italian job special edition, and i was very impressed with it all, however when i was opening the drivers door there was a loud click about halfway between being closed and at the point where it cant open any further. this was the same on the passenger side.

I will be viewing the car again later on in the week, and i will mention the clicking to him, i just wanted a heads up what to expect, see if the price could be reduced etc.

could it be the check strap - sometimes they click at their full extent

as long as the hinge panel isn't cracked / corroded on door or shell

it will be the door check strap most likely. nothing to worry about and quite normal. if you re new to minis you'd better get used to annoying clicks and rattles!

would the check strap need to be replaced or can it still be used? i took it for a test drive and it all sounded fine and held its own when we came to a dual carriageway

you could, they are cheap from minispares.com but I think the click you're on about is normal so it wont make any difference.

yeah both my doors do that too. Inside the door theres the 2 hinges, and then a little metal bit in two parts with a pin in the middle, when my door gets halfway open it clicks really loudly. I've tried lubing it a few times but it still does it. Doesnt affect the doors really, just annoying. If thats the worst bit about the car though then i'd say you're onto a winner!

it's a broken check strap.. I'd replace it if I was you.. cheap and just makes the car so much more appealing.. easy change so worth doing

Standard, mine still does it with new check straps. It catches on the bulk head or fresh air vent shroud.

Mine does this too on both doors, I assumed it was the point at which the catch on the check strap "caught" and the door would be held open?

I had this on mine on both doors (must happen on most Minis judging by peoples comments here) mine used to make an awful noise and barely let the door open, especially on the passenger door. I just whipped out my trusty WD40 with the little straw attachment and gave the hinges a right good lubrication! Let them soak for a good 10-20 mins, whilst opening and closing the door every now n then to let the stuff get into the little nooks n crannies. Keep spraying the hinges where the little pin attaches to and eventually the noise will be minimal if at all :proud:
