I've got a 2002 mini one which has been an angel up until now!! I put it into gear to pull away from a junction and when I took my foot off the clutch the car didn't move! So the engine is still running, it appears to go into gear but when I lift off the clutch and press on the accelerator it doesn't budge....any ideas?????

cv joint or driveshaft is my bet.

Get someone to look underneath at the driveshafts to see if one is turning. be carefull though as engine running and in gear isnt the safest way to inspect a car. Have the driver put the handbrake on and be ready to shut the engine off.

Agree with Jordie on this, Drive shaft or CV... Also heard certain models were prone to gearbox faults...

Why? Its generic advice, same would apply to a ford fiesta etc.

Yes, this site is for the classic mini, but it is full of people with a wealth of knowledge, so we can still help this person who has stumbled across our forum with the knowledge/advice we hold.

Agreed, for specific BMW mini faults or common problems, it may be better to look at the BMW mini owners forums such as http://www.mini2.com/forum/

I have, like i said, generic fault = why cant we give advice? its still a car and mechanical components. Anyone with mechanical knowledge / experience can advise on a mechanical fault.

If they came here and said, i want to recongifure the dash display on my 2013 countryman or my bmw mini cooper s r56 boot keeps filling with water, id have said try BMW mini owners forums. That sort of information will be available from the owners forums etc.

You have to look at the bigger picture and provide the relevant advice.

Agreed. I also have a moggy van , but tech advice on the A series engine is much better here than on the muggy owners forum (I guess because there's so many more minis) so I'd come here for tech advice on the engine.

No pun intended but classic bmw mini gearbox problem.

Early R50 mini's had the dreadful Midland Type gearbox. Prone to just giving up the ghost. Normally you do get some whining tho leading up to it.

Failing that your clutch has dissintegrated. :-)

I had very similar symptoms with my Montego TD, and that's what it was.  The clutch had completely disintegrated.  One minute it was absolutely fine, drove beautifully, the next moment it just completely gave up with no warning at all.

If a drive shaft or cv fails the speedo usually still works so you get no drive but still a speed reading unless the d speedo drive is taken from a wheel sounds like the clutch has failed or the gear selector on top of the gearbox (another common fault) feels like it's going into gear but it's still in nutral
