Is there continuity and zero resistance on both of the main cables between the alternator plug and the solenoid?  These cables include a fusible link in the injection cars.

This:

The voltage is steady at 12 volt on the exciter wire then when it is plugged in to the alternator it goes straight to earth.

Is what's meant to happen.  The earth it's finding is through the alternator circuit, that's how the ignition warning lamp works.  If it didn't find earth there the lamp wouldn't light.

success i think any way. having gone through the wiring yet again i decided the only thing that had not been changed was the fuse box and in line fuse holders so i went into my shed of many spares and found a brand new un used fuse box and a hand full of in line fuse holders so i spent the morning with my soldering iron soldering in new fuse's and guess what for the last 3 days now the alternator has been giving a solid 14.4 volts at the battery with the lights on and everything running.

while none of the old fuse's were blown and nothing seemed to be in bad condition there was obviously a problem somewhere

i will keep you posted as to any more problems
