Hi,
Just got my mini back from the MOT, emissions were high so jet was adjusted, and it passed. Now it runs lumpy and coughy, the guy said I need a new jet. Basically I want to know what kit to get (waxstat or not) and how easy it to change/set up.
Got a 1987 advantage, 998.
Looking at getting a stage 1 kit at the end of January so is it worth just waiting for that, to save me doing a job twice, as will need to change the needle then and get it tuned.
Think that's about all for now, thanks!

Try changing the needle first, these 'swing needle' versions wear badly right at the idle setting.

This wear results in a 'step' in the needle which is about 3mm from the thick end on one side of the needle and can normally be felt by running you fingernail along the needle. This step has the effect of richening the mixture at around idle. When you then adjust this out it runs lean on mid-throttle...

Unless the jet is exceptionally worn you should find that with a new needle it will adjust up fine and run a lot better.

Sounds good, thanks! I'll just hold out for the stage 1 and then just do a job lot :-)

I never had a Mini pass on emissions.

I always just turned the mix back up as I left. Heck, I got chummy with my MOT guy, he'd do it for me for a while.

For setup. Gunson ColorTune is pretty good. What I always used.
