No thats about it, slow and 60mph top-ish.
Mine gets to about 70-80ish if i push it, but 50 should feel nice and relaxing to be at.
Find your self a mini specialist garage, get them to do the works on ur engine, timing check, fuel mix that sorta thing.
A manifold that loses compression (leaks air basically) can cause a lag from pulling off to when the engine goes (feels a little like a small turbo boost, feels cool but bad really)
The only way ur gona get more of a kick is stage 1 then goto stage 2head.
When was it last MOTd?
Nate

why is everyone suddenly daying 998's are so slow? if its set up properly it should do 90 on the flat without much trouble. both of you need to get them set up by the sounds of it. if theyre standard then the needle shouldnt be far off, so get a garage to set up the timing and c02 to where they should be, check the points gap and make sure dizzy cap, spark plugs etc is all good and away you go. they are a cracking little engine

im having similar problems but i put it down to gearing, it revs really hard at 70. i have 3.44 ratio. although a stage 1 kit is a go'er next week. lets see what happens.

more speed. well if you want to be cheap then strip the interior and start sticking holes in the air box. that normaly give it a little more.

you'll probably find u have a 3.2 or 3.1 diff which would take a better top end than us 3.44 998erswooow, wait a min, u only get 80 if u push it - blimmey

i had a 998 with a 3.44 diff and 12" wheels. it did 100 on the level with a stage 1 and it easily did 85-90 before a stage 1. 70mph is just over 4000rpm. it'll be higher rpm with 10" wheels tho

I had a 998 87 Mayfair with Stage 1 and otherwise stock....tuned it myself and by that i mean messed with the carb, it was a while ago and im sure i look back with rose tinted specs but defo was often off the 90 clock and swear got 58ish once in 2nd on L2B....really annoyed my mate who could'nt keep up in his 1275!!
But now i have 1275 and can't go that fast so i guess what goes around comes around....however as soonas its on the road again i will get it set up properly and should be all good!

its a completely stock 998 but, its a mini 25 which had out the factory a different ratio (gearbox or diff i never remember which) which acording to leyland makes it better for cruising on motorways (or easier to get a 100 out of)
ill found out
ok mikecmini
jus found out all mini 25s have a 2.95 final drive, rather a big dufference from 3.44 lol

I've had 95 ish out of my standard 998
The way I've been tuning mine to run properly is....
With the engine running (full warmed up) lift the piston-lifting pin till it hits the piston and then a further 1 mm on the side of the carb and listen to what happens,
If it cuts out the mixture is too lean, if the idle increases the mix is too rich and if nothing happens the mixture is about right.
The Haynes manual goes into much more detail, Pages 4A .15 and 16 fuel systems.
and if your not sure as to were the lifting pin is try the link below
HS4 Lift pin, Where on earth is it?
