Just picked up my 2003 MINI today. It has this weird aerial/tax disc holder that is all puffed up.

Any ideas what it's for?

New to MINI but have had 4 proper ones ;) sadly, needed something a bit newer... But it's great fun!!

is the wire actually an aerial? if so my guess is a DAB aerial/tax disc holder, if not then who knows?

It looks a bit like the automatic payment tag my dad had for his car for the M6 toll (not quite the same but similar).

 

Maybe its a tracker for the tax disc incase someone tries to steal it?

 

Have you tried the Mini2 forum as well? They may be able to give you a better answer than us lot.

Looks like there is no need for a tax disc holder as of next year with the disc being abolished so dont spend too much on one

I think it is some kind of aerial. The wire disappears down the side of the dashboard and there is a mounting bracket of some kind to the left of the stereo. So how do I remove it and is it safe to do so?

Lol. I bought a cheap tax disc holder for £1.99 from Halfords!

Just cut the cable if you don't want it. The bracket is probably where the phone cradle was.

it might feed into the cradle then into back of the stereo so it comes thro the speakers.

if you aint gonna be using it, cut it out as far back under the dash, or just pull the dash off and remove it the correct way...it went in so can come out

  Most car kits are fitted by just tucking the cables under the edges of the dash so you don't have to pull it out (since the cockpit is installed in the car in one massive piece it's not a simple thing to remove the dash), as above just tug on the cables and they should come out.  It very probably is a phone aerial but could be a GPS or traffic data or alarm antenna too.  Never seen a toll tag as a tax disc holder myself.
