I need to replace my wonky water pump pulley.  Trouble is I'm not sure how old my engine is - no engine number.  There are a few to choose from on the Minispares site,  How do I figure out which is the right one?

Cheers,

Tim

I think the main difference is if you have a bypass hose fitted or not.

You can check that easily by looking to see if a small rubber hose links the water pump to the cylinder head - it's towards the back of the pump.

Once you know that then it's just a case of selecting the right one.

If it does have a bypass hose fitted make sure your renew it at the same time as the pump, and put the solid rubber one in not the easy fitment one.

Good luck with your scraped knuckles ...

Dom

All pulleys will fit on all pumps, so you don't need to be confused about bypass hoses and impellors.

There are two basic sizes of pulley (excluding MPi as they are a poly-vee belt) and they are different enough that you can't really confuse them.
The following link has pictures and sizes - chuck a tape across yours and you should be in business.

If you don't fance shelling out for a new one, I do have a box of assorted pulleys sat in the shed.

Missread the post and assumed it was a faulty pump, so your 100% correct on the pulleys.

My bad, I didn't put 'pulley' in the title, not your fault!

I don't know!  I'd have to measure it.  by the way, I'm assuming the measure is the OD not to the bottom of the vee, is that right?

They are different enough that it will be obvious.

Just to add something. If your not sure about your engine I wouldn't go for a high capacity water pump, as the bigger ones can sometimes foul on the inside of the water jacket against the cylinder.

I now only use my mini in fine weather so haven't had much experience of component life lately, but have had many A Series powered cars over the last 40 years and have always thought that the water pump was a weak point. They're under £20 so I'd replace that at the same time, and the bypass hose, and the bottom hose , as otherwise they fail at the most inconvenient time. - preventative maintenance!
