My MPI 1996 Rover Mini has a fairly bland plain black steering wheel centre, where the airbag is covered. Does anyone know how to flick this cover off, and what I do about not detonating the airbag? Thanks in advance

To remove the steering wheel, the battery needs to be disconnected and then wait half an hour for the system to drain, then its safe to disconnect the air bag

Ok thanks. Is it a case of just flicking the cover off with a flat head? Thanks

I'm not sure, you'll have to wait until someone else comments, but I know you need to let the remaining power drain away before removing it

Surely it's best to leave the steering wheel intact even if it is just plain one as these were original to your car, not good to be messing about with the airbags as I doubt many of them have been serviced like they were supposed to be as it states in the manual

The cover and airbag is one part. It is secured to the steering wheel by two torx screws from the rear. These need to be undone and then the airbag module can be removed and unplugged.

As above, remove the ignition key, disconnect the battery ( both terminals ) and leave for at least 10 minutes for the SRS backup system to discharge

Is it possible to detach the airbag from the cover then, or does it have to be purchased as a full unit?

what are you trying to achieve?

I'm trying to change the centre of the steering wheel, just the center with the badge

I'm not sure what options there are then really as I think they are all the same, other than changing the steering wheel completely, that what I have done
