I've had a shell knocking around here for yonks. It has never been registered in my name although it does have the id and the old type V5 still registered in the previous keepers name. Therefore any replacement V5c's both blue and red type will have been sent to the previous keeper.

I would like to register this in my name now can I use the new keeper supplement from the old V5 still or should I just apply for a replacement v5c logbook?

You will be fine. I sold a James L15 last year and only had the old V5. I just didn't think about it. New owner sent it off and a new one came back no problem.

Sounds promising,

I just did an autotrader ID check on it and no info came back at all. Would that point to your not taxed after 1998 statement?

Click on Vehicle enquiry on the following link. It will tell you if the car is on the DVLA data base and when it was last taxed or SORN'd. It will also tell you if the vehicle has been scrapped or exported. If it all checks out OK then I would just send the old V5 off. It may take longer to come back if the DVLA feel the need to contact the previous owner.

Good Luck

I've got one for my convertible. It's kinda awkward as it was my car, but bought in my Dad's name at the time.  I never got the logbook changed over to my name and am now not in contact with my Dad.  The car is stripped down to nothing but a rusty bare shell, but I want to eventually bring it back to life.  All I've got is the old V5 in his name at an address that he's not lived at for 15 years.  He's now living in Cyprus (I think) and we don't talk any more.

I'm hoping that I can fill mine in and it'll get back to me in my name, then I can declare it SORN.  It's been off the road since '97 I think.

Thanks for that,

Again, the DVLA doesn't show any info at all..............

The cars been off the road for ages and the last change of keeper was 1970, could that be having an effect?

Or you could fill a transfer form from the post office (sorry I can't remember the number). They try to contact the previous owner, but if they get no reply they will issue you with a V5.

Tamworth is thinking of the V62 from the post office. Check "V5 not given at sale" or whatever the box is you'll get it free. They might try and contact prior owner then when nothing comes back issue you the new V5.

The Matt same goes for you too

If you have the old V5 you can fill it out and send it off to register it to yourself at no charge.

If you enclose a stamped addressed envolope and a request then they will post the oiginal one back to you to keep with the cars history.

What many people do not know is that a lot of the vehicle records were lost at one time due to a fire at the DLC ? as it was called then and therefore a lot of old vehicle are not actually recorded and reciept of the original documents will reopen the record - As long as the registration number has not been re-issued/sold by the DVLA.
