Hi... I have a serious problem with my 998 mini..

Pressing the clutch down and engaging gear, when I lift clutch... no drive!!!

I thought it was the clutch master or slave so cleaned and re-sealed the slave.

Clutch seem to disengage okay.

but still no drive...

Jacked car up off front wheels.. engaged gear engine running...wheels do not rotate.

Looking down onto half shafts... one is rotating but not turning wheel....

In gear with engine running and clutch up...

there is a grumbling, rattly noise coming from somewhere in the engine but I cannot pinpoint it.

This may be a red herring but...

I took the clutch cover off and all looked okay.

I removed the central bolt and was going to take off the clutch assembly but did not have a adequate puller...so gave up. On inspecting the central bolt the tags had sheared off, but I refitted it as is.... I cannot believe that all the drive is through this bolt and there was no evidence of metal filings in the clutch cover, but is this a possible issue??

Help.... Has someone experienced an issue like this before.

regards

Stuart

If the drive shaft isn't turning the wheel then that is most likely your problem...Probably pot joint

Pot joints can be fairly easyly replaced. Make sure you drain the oil though, because it will come out of the 'potjoinhole' when you remove the potjoint :P

try this

jack car up put on a pair of stand

take wheel of

get some one to start car

put foot on brake

put in gear and lift the clutch

if it is the pot joint you will see the bit of the joint next to the diff turn

and not the shaft

to have a good look get under the car

so you can see bouth sides of the diff at the same time

this is not very safe

I don't think it will be the pot joints

sounds more like a clutch to me

After writing this and reading the replies.. I started the engine, engaged a gear and lifted the clutch...

The whirring noise started and I had a look around the engine bay.

The nearside drive shaft was turning but no further than the CV joint.

I think Nick may have hit the nail on the head.

Why would it come out of engagement.... it was working fine until the other day?

Strip it down to investigate. It's all pretty direct, if the shaft itself is turning then it will have to be the outer CV. All the driveshaft joints are held on the shafts by internal spring clips and splines.
