Merry Christmas all :-)) hoping for a bit of help and advice please.
Went to my car yesterday (1983 mini 1000) and it turned over very slowly, lights dim, wipers hardly moving ect. So failed to start. A couple of hours earlier I'd just done a 60 mile round trip and all was well! Put the jump leads on and it fired up straight away. Let it idle for about 15 mins while I put things away. Set off to the garage for fuel but after about a quarter of a mile it started miss firing, lights where getting dimmer ect. Got to the point where no lights and would only drive in first gear, any acceleration and it misfired. Got it off the main road and that was it. Dead!

Tried to restart and nothing, no ign lights, nothing. Battery was completely flat.

Now I accept that a 15 min idle and half mile drive wouldn't recharge a battery but what would cause it to discharge so quickly? I didn't leave the lights on, there's no alarm/immobliiser, there's not even a radio haha. Plus it was driving fine earlier that day! Not had time to look over the car as it was late, dark and starting to rain plus it's now stranded half mile away till I arrange recovery.

I've looked in the FAQ re electrical issues/ charging ect and done a quick search. But was just wondering if anybody had any other ideas where or what the cause could be?

Thanks all and merry christmas

Have you checked if your alternator is charging? It doesn't take long to discharge a battery if the alternator is on its last legs.

Get a voltmeter on the battery, fire the car up and give it a rev. If the battery doesn't go any higher than about 12.5v your alternator has blown and would give you the symptoms explained. If the alternator works properly the voltage should reach about 14.5v

Not had chance to do anything yet as I need to get it back home, looked the testing alternator/charging thread so will follow that once I get chance. Just seemed to lose everything so quickly. When the alternator failed on the old Landy it got me another 20 miles on the battery lol

Well a quick update and thanks to those who replied. So charged my battery the other day and it's holding a good charge. Tested the alternator today following guides posted in other threads and nothing at all, no output or anything. So does anyone have an alternator for sale lol. Don't realy want to wait till after the new year.
Thanks all and happy new year
