I'm trying to locate a set if new rings for my MG Metro pistons and it's proving nearly impossible without spending muchos.

FW Thornton quoted me £120 plus VAT & Delivery for a set, or they could sell me a 4 ring version for £50, but aren't they different?

Where does everyone else find rare piston rings without spending too much?

Thanks

If they are 21963 pistons get a set of R41570's from minispares. Less than £50 a set.

Sorry, should have mentioned they are 20832 pistons.

The rings R41570 check to see if they will fit your pistons. As these pistons are very old are you sure those pistons are fit for reuse? Have you checked the ring side groove clearance? Scrap the pistons if it is more than 0.004".

I don't think FW Thornton are taking the mick if something is rare and virtually impossible to find the price reflects this that's why you don't find cooper s engines for £100 at the local scrap yard like Ac says the ring grooves are more than likely shot so your best bet would be a new set of pistons

Well the engine's only done 35000 miles so there's no way I'm scrapping the pistons. But I'll measure them anyway.

What are people's thoughts on the 4 ring version from Thornton?

Thoughts on the 4-ring set are that if the ring grooves are a compatible size for the pistons, and if the vertical float of the rings in the grooves is between 0.0005" and 0.003" and if there are the correct compression and scraper rings to suit the piston and if the bores can be honed and will still give an acceptable ring gap of 0.015" maximum and if the bores are parallel after honing and if the pistons are in good condition then all will be well :D.

That's a lot of 'ifs' and it might be easier to re-bore to the next size up and fit new pistons.

Well I'm taking my engine to a machine shop in the new year and I was going to get them to measure the bores and tell me whether a hone would be sufficient or whether a re-bore is necessary.

When I spoke with FW Thornton regarding the 4 ring set, he said that they are exactly the same rings just with an extra ring that I can leave out.

When the engine has been inspected & measured you will have your answer.
