Hi all

New to the forums so sorry for coming straight in with a problem

I've had my 1971 Austin Mini off the road for a couple of years as I couldn't afford to run her.
Anyway I came to starting it again today and initially it went well

Got it running with the choke on, let it turn over for a bit but it died shortly afterwards

Thinking I mightn't have had enough fuel in it I went put some more in but after that couldn't get it to start for more than a couple of seconds at a time

It'd start and then shortly afterwards die

Could this be due to a blockage in the fuel line or the carb from all the crap that might have built up?

But then

Another problem, trying to get it to start again the ignition coil started making a large buzzing noise, which carried on after the ignition was turned off

to get it to stop we had to disconnect the battery, and reconnecting the battery brings back the loud buzzing noise at the coil

Any ideas much appreciated

The first things that pop in my mind : Dirt in the carb, fuel pump that doesn't give enough fuel, carb float problem.

 

For the coil I think you have an electrical issue, check al the fuses, maybe you have a blown one orso?

The dirty carbs were my first thought didn't get chance to clean them before this electrical mishap

Checked all the fuses and they're all intact.
I don't suppose replacing the coil would do anything would it, its the fact its still makes the noise with nothing from the ignition thats throwing me

check for voltage at the coil positive, If disconnecting battery makes it stop suggests power is still getting to the coil with ignition off.

 

Carb probably wants a good clean , unleaded goes off and pretty sure it leaves a gummy residue after a while

Yeah its definitely still getting power without ignition, completely through me when it happened!

Upon re-inspection after disconnecting the coil and then reconnecting the battery there was still a loud noise which sounds like its actually coming from the distributor which surely can't be right because that gets its power from the coil right?

Well and truly thrown now, it may have to be put in the hands of somebody who knows a little more what they're doing

Possibly the horn buzzing, any relays? Fuel faults can be tracked down by splashing a little fuel into the carb throat. Float chamber vent blockage is another possibility to investigate for the cutting out.
