can you use the starter off of a '93 1275 on a '85 998 engine in the '93 car? the '93 starter has the solenoid on the top and the other is mounted else where, is there anything else?? is the later one pre-engaged, does it matter haha

The '93 car needs a pre-engaged starter. You cannot use an inertia starter motor on a pre-engaged flywheel

Pre-engaged is possible on an inertia flywheel but I wouldnt recommend it as it destroys the ring gear and has the tendency to lock, as well as turn over slower

Shouldn't '85 be pre engaged? My '83 is pre engaged.

That thought crossed my mind too! Didn't think they used inertia that late? Anyway as already said, pre-engaged and inertia aren't particularly interchangeable, different amount of ring gear teeth for a start. Pre-engaged is the better one IMO because as the name suggests, it engages the pinion on the ring gear before spinning up the motor meaning it doesn't chew teeth as much as an inertia which does not have this operation.

the starters look different my current one from the 93 car has the pre-engaged with the solenoid on the top and the new engine has a start without the solenoid so i guessed it was inertia?? might be wrong. is it easy to fit and wire in the solenoid to later cars?
