I´m about to re-assemble my "new" 1098 engine (my first engine rebuild ever)...

Can´t find the lock tabs for the main bearing caps on any webshop?! Just the big end lock tabs...

However - browsing around forums, I´ve read that some recommend to not use lock tabs at all! Is that the right way to do it?

And what locking compound shall I use instead? There´s a bunch of different kinds out there...

Something else to consider?

I didn't use them on my build, I didn't want to eat into the soft material and there be any working loose if you know what I mean. Most of the new stuff is made of chease..

I did use arp for the rod bolts. And the newer a+ style bolts with the indentations in the bolt head for the mains. They are reputed as being better. I could find arp bolt for the mains at the time or would have gone with them. The reason I say this is because arp some with special lube and washers, plus the give specific instructions as to the installation of the fastner, so effectively deletes the lock tab from the installation.

I used arp lube on the std mains including under the bolt head, but this was my decision.

But then there will be people who say use the lock tabs..

The thing I learnt building the engine builder it's all down to you, you have to make all of the decisions, if it all goes wrong your to blame. This made making some of them harder as it was the first time I had built an engine. In the end I went with people who had built some large hp engines and run them in anger.

by the way mine was a road engine and some occasional track day stuff, it's a small bore supercharged unit so is knocking out reasonable hp.

Lock tabs are not really used these days, just torque the nuts correctly and there won't be an issue.

Don't use Loctite on big end or main studs/nuts.
