Hi, I'm converting an spi to carb and am fitting a new distributor, a powerspark 59d.  When I tried to fit it I followed the instructions in the haynes manual and the dizzy stands off from the block by about 5mm and wont go in any further.  I also tried pulling it in with the clamp.  Is it OK to leave the 5mm gap?

you may be 180 degrees out, turn the rotor arm only and see if it engages fully

Check Irostoke's suggestion first, if this does not help then are you sure you have a matched set of A+ distributor drive shaft and matching A+ dog on the end of the new dizzy?

Thanks, yes, they're both A+ and 180 degrees out it's even worse.  Any other ideas?  Does this gap matter since the oil seal is in and the drive dog feels meshed?

Are you sure that the distributor drive shaft in the block is full home usually the distributor flange sits tight to the block if I doesn't look right then most certainly it isn't in far enough

If it's new or reconditioned they can be a pain as the rubber O-ring is a very tight fit.
